Below you will find answers to some of the questions we
are most often asked, but if you still have a question,

Insurance
Why would I apply for insurance if our club already has insurance?
- You only need to apply for public event insurance if you are going to have guests
over. If you have "members only" and the facility you
will be meeting at doesn't request we list them as an "additional insured",
then you don't need to apply for public event insurance. This flow chart might help you.
When do I need additional insurance beyond what our club
policy offers?
- When you invite guests to ride with you or to a function you are hosting.
Why would I need to apply for "additional insured" insurance?
- Some facilities require that we list them on our
policy. This is so that while we are on their property,
our insurance covers any mishaps we may have and
not the facilities day to day insurance. Page two of this chart might help you.
How do I apply for public event or additional insured insurance?
- If you are a chapter officer, login to your chapter Admin portal and click on the first menu link. If you do not have a portal login ask your chapter president to request one through National.
Why do we need to go through NOPRC to purchase additional insurance? Why can't we just go directly to the insurance agency?
- The National office has the master database of who is authorized to request
the purchase of additional insurance on our policy. We first check to make
sure the request is authorized and then forward it to the agency. NOPRC is
the policy holder, so only NOPRC may submit requests for additional insurance
to the agency.
BASIC INFORMATION ON THE 2012 OPRC INSURANCE PLAN
OPRC maintains liability coverage for our activities throughout the country. A portion of member dues is utilized to pay these premiums.
WHO IS COVERED?
GENERAL LIABILITY:
The Old People’s Riding Club, Inc. and/or its Individual Registered Members are covered for Liability while attending any OPRC sponsored activity or while acting within their capacity as an officer, under the direction of the national organization or affiliated chapter.
Coverage can be extended to landowners/locations and locations on which a club activity takes place. This coverage only protects the landowner for liability incurred as a direct result of a “covered activity.” To cover a landowner each chapter must request additional insured insurance through the web admin portal.
An officer of the chapter must have submitted the name and complete mailing address of the landowner, the location of the property if different, the date and a brief description of the activity at least two weeks prior to that activity taking place.
Chapter officers are able to print a proof of insurance, from the chapter’s web admin portal for landowners who just want proof that your chapter has insurance to cover your chapter’s sponsored activities on their premises, and do not want additional coverage provided to them for any liability that may arise out of your chapter’s activities on their premises.
If your landowner requires they be added to the OPRC policy as an additional insured, a certificate of insurance will be emailed to them from our insurance coordinator after you have filled out the online insurance request form. This is the situation where the landowner wants to be specifically added to the club policy so coverage is provided to them if a claim results from the club sponsored activities on their premises.
WHAT IS COVERED?
Liability–OPRC’s liability policy provides insurance protection for suits, claims, or judgments brought against The Old People’s Riding Club, any affiliated Chapters or member for alleged bodily injury or property damage sustained by third parties, and arising out of an approved, supervised Old People’s Riding Club activity for which the insured is legally responsible.
WHAT IS A “COVERED ACTIVITY”?
Any club-scheduled activity to which the entire club or an entire segment of the club (for example, all D-2s) is invited is covered, even if only one member attends the activity. Private lessons to OPRC members outside of the chapter-scheduled meeting are NOT COVERED.
WHAT COMPANIES ARE WE INSURED WITH AND WHAT ARE THE LIMITS OF COVERAGE?

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY OUR INSURANCE?
The policy specifically excludes activities involving rodeo, racing and jousting; mechanically operated amusement devices, fireworks, bodily injury or property damage arising out of the rendering or failure to render of any professional services; bodily injury or property damage arising out of the ownership, maintenance, use or entrustment to others of any auto owned or operated by or rented or loaned to an insured (this includes operation and loading or unloading); and bodily injury or property damage due to the selling, distributing, serving or furnishing of any alcoholic beverage. Swimming is only allowed as part of a component of an organized camp. This is a brief summary; the policy will give the full exclusion details.
If your chapter is hosting a used tack sale, it is required that you give everyone who purchases tack a disclaimer that states clearly your chapter is not warranting the safety and condition of the tack, either
now or in the future.
WOULD FAILURE TO POLICE SAFETY INTERFERE WITH OUR COVERAGE?
OPRC’s accident coverage requires that participants wear approved headgear and footwear. Failure to do so could affect the coverage. Medical releases are required to be renewed annually so the most up-to-date information is available on the member.
Information on the member’s own primary health insurance should be included on the Medical Card worn in the armband for all activities. Liability claims arising from a failure to utilize safety procedures could have an effect on coverage in the future.
WHEN DOES COVERAGE BEGIN & END FOR MEMBERS?
Liability coverage begins for new or renewing members upon reciept of their membership dues to the National membership coordinator.
It is ESSENTIAL that newly accepted members of a chapter and all renewals be reported IMMEDIATELY to the National Office. Coverage for members begins upon arrival at the site of the Old People’s Riding Club activity, and ends with the conclusion of the activity for the day. No liability coverage is in force while an OPRC member is driving, being driven, or riding to or from an OPRC activity.
WHERE DO I FIND THE PUBLIC EVENT REQUEST FORM?
The OPRC insurance request form is electronic. It is available through your chapter’s admin portal. Your chapter officers have access to this portal. If you wish to gain access to this portal, please have your chapter president request that our webmaster grant you access.
HOW DO I GET COVERAGE FOR OUR MEETINGS?
Any official meeting that is on your Club’s schedule and fits the description of an “approved” OPRC activity will automatically be covered by OPRC’s liability insurance.
DO WE NEED TO INSURE OUR FUNDRAISER?
If your fundraiser is going to involve non-OPRC members (for instance, a schooling horse show, open to the general public), you will need to request public event insurance through your admin portal.
This will extend OPRC’s coverage to the non-OPRC participants in your activity. Applications for Public Event insurance need to be submitted at least two weeks prior to your scheduled event.
Applications received after the event has taken place will be returned without processing.
OPRC National covers the cost of three public event insurance requests per chapter per calendar year.
All non-OPRC members must complete the Non-Member Waiver & Release Form prior to participating in any fundraiser or approved OPRC activity. Failure to obtain Waivers for non-members could jeopardize liability protection. The Waiver form is available at the end of your online public event insurance application and through a link in your insurance request conformation email.
PLEASE NOTE: Not all events can be covered by OPRC’s liability coverage. The underwriters base their estimates of our premium on risks associated with “normal” OPRC activities, such as mounted meetings,
rallies, etc. Activities outside of this “normal” range may not be covered and may require separate coverage. Any questions about fundraisers or potentially unusual activities should be directed to our insurance committee at Insurance. You may need to obtain additional coverage for OPRC activities that are not “normal.” National OPRC will not cover the cost of the public event insurance if your activity is not considered a “normal” OPRC activity. If your activity is determined not to be a “normal” OPRC activity, our insurance company will work directly with you and you will receive a reduced public event insurance rate.
WHERE CAN WE FIND PROOF OF INSURANCE?
You can print a certificate of insurance from your chapter’s admin portal. This document will show the limits of insurance and policy dates.
IS COVERAGE PROVIDED FOR AN OPRC MEMBER RIDING OUTSIDE OF AN OFFICIAL CLUB ACTIVITY?
No, OPRC coverage (liability) will not respond to claims arising outside of any OPRC activities.
In addition, the policy will not cover landowners or OPRC members riding or using Landowners outside of an OPRC activity.
HOW DO I FIND OUT THE STATUS OF AN ACCIDENT CLAIM?
After an accident, you will deal directly with the insurance company. They will give you the details of how to check the status of your claim.
I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS.
It is near impossible to answer all questions. We hope that by giving you these guidelines, you will better understand the basics of the OPRC and chapter policy. For specific situations, please email us at Insurance.
Please see the actual policy for all terms, conditions and exclusions, available through your chapter’s admin portal.
REPORTING AN ACCIDENT OR OCCURRENCE:
WHO SUBMITS THE REPORT/CLAIM?
The chapter president or chapter safety officer should submit the Accident Report Form, available through the OPRC website under the “Forms” link, to the OPRC National Office for purposes of tracking annual accident and injury statistics. This form is a Word document, if you cannot open that format, please contact us at Insurance.
WHAT PAPERWORK NEEDS TO BE FILLED OUT?
For any accident with injuries, the Accident Report Form should be submitted to OPRC National as soon as possible.
For any accidents involving a non-OPRC member (for instance, a rider in your club’s benefit horse show), the Accident Report Form should be sent in within 20 days of the incident.
Please make a note in the top margin that this is a “Non-Member”.
When you report the accident to our insurance company, they will require you to complete their accident claim form (see “HOW DOES A CLAIM GET FILED?”).
